Beyond "Efficient Dissemination of Timely Information"
It's a very short article, which is too bad, because it makes an important point worth elaborating upon. The point, specifically, is that knowledge management (and by extension, online learning) is about more than disseminating timely information to staff. For one thing, such an approach doesn't ask why you would want to do this, which in turn leaves no means of distinguishing between useful and useless information. It also converts the internet into a publishing medium, which belies its real strength as a communications medium. By James Robertson, CM Briefing, October, 2003 [-->

More on the PLoS Biology launch
Helen Pearson, Free science journal hits press, Nature, October 10, 2003 (free even for non-subscribers). Nothing new here, just a prominent alert that the launch is coming on Monday. At end end of this short article Pearson tells readers that PLoS Biology will be peer reviewed. But in the body of the article she juxtaposes open access with the views of some scientists who question the effectiveness of peer review, thereby leaving the false impression that the two topics are somehow connected. Return of the Anti-Feist
The Database and Collections of Information Misappropriations Act (H.R. 2361) was officially introduced in the House yesterday, co-sponsored by Representatives Coble (R-NC), Greenwood (R-PA), Hobson (R-OH), Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Rep Smith (R-TX), and Tauzin (R-LA). The bill would give quasi-copyright protection to compilations of fact and make it a crime to copy and distribute them without permission. It would not balance this protection with fair use, limited term, or first sale, the important counterweights in standard copyright law. From FOS News on October 10, 2003 at 10:14 a.m..

This is the direction we're headed with online content, including learning content - rather than thinking of learning as something that is accessed and run separately from applications, we need to think of it as something that will run within an app
