Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education - A Case Study
This report is about the introduction of online education in higher education. Specifically, it is a case study of one University’s approach to offering postgraduate courses totally online - the University of Southern Queensland. As such, caution is needed in extrapolating the findings from this study to other educational settings; nonetheless, the authors believe that the experiences of staff at USQ will have relevance to all institutions that have either begun to offer programs online or are contemplating doing so. The report was commissioned by the Department of Education, Science and

Origins and Nature of the History of the Internet In Australia
The Internet emerged in the U.S. engineering research community between 1969 and 1983, an outgrowth of the marriage between computing and communications technologies. Australian computing researchers had less advanced but cost-effective mechanisms in place at the time, and adopted the Internet protocols only when they had reached a level of maturity. Rapid progress was made from 1989 onwards. By 1993-94, the U.S. Internet backbones were in transition from an academic infrastructure to a more conventional business model. Australian use by individuals, business and government grew almost as fast

TakeAIM-Present leverages (among other formats) PowerPoint XP ability to save in MHTM format which makes any presentation into one great long page with all of your slides in it. The use of this approach is very effective as it preloads on all participants' computers all of the slides at the beginning of the show and makes any slide change pretty instantaneous for all participants, independently of their connection speed. Generosity in short posts
At the start of a weblog-driven course, I might show students two posts, such as these complete examples by Dave Winer, to help us name the linking and explaining practices that make a difference for a reader. In the one, the writer links to something presumably of value but gives no clue what it might be, and in the other the writer takes a few seconds to name the topic and even the likely audience. I see that as an act of generosity to readers, from a writer who is respectful of their...

Why I'm supporting Dean - The short answer
Dave Rogers asks, in a comment to my posting about canvassing for Dean, why I'm supporting the Gov. Here's my reply: If you matched my positions up with the candidates' (see the WBUR vote by issue quiz), it'd come out pretty much a wash among all of them except Lieberman. So, although overall I prefer Dean's stances, I'm not voting primarily on the issues. There are two other reasons I'm supporting Dean. First, I think he has the best chance to beat Bush. There are clearly reasonable arguments about this and I have never made an accurate political prediction.

Can anyone tell me why an entire news cycle was taken up by the crash of a plane full of tourists? "Weblogs Improve Writing"
Mark Bernstein continues the conversation saying we already know the verdict: "Weblogs improve writing." I really like the way he says it. In that Weblogs require frequent updates, provide an audience, tend to cross genre and topic, and take place on the computer, Mark feels there is no question that they benefit those that use them. Maybe it is just as easy as that. Maybe we can take it on "if-then" faith that Weblogs by their very nature and design make better writers. I feel better already ;0).
