Retirement Uncertainty
When you're ready to retire, ... Will you be poor? Better start planning now. And don't forget to factor in inflation. We used to think that having a million dollars saved by age 65 would be enough, but it's not. Your best bet is to start your own business, and start it soon. [CNN}

Wiki Up (southeast of Wikieup)
I spent too much of today fiddling around with setting up a wiki on our new Jade server. This was at the request of one of our most intrpeid and adventurous faculty members, one I hooked on HTML in 1994, roped into blogs last year, and he's already to push the envelope out past Mars. The obliqure reference in the post title is that I am about 150 miles southeast of the aptly named small Arizona town of "Wikieup" on the wild highway between Phoenix and Las Vegas. Efficient Use of New Nechnologies in Language Learning: A Case Reflection
I don't know whether a study of the use of email for language is really breaking new ground, but I want to ask whether the presumptions in the analysis are well founded. The author writes, "efficiency is concerned with (1) the maximum production of desired effects (outputs or outcomes) and (2) the minimum use of resources (inputs) which are not absolutely necessary or which are not readily available." So, on this analysis, minimizing "the need to access computers" becomes "more efficient". But is that so? Anyhow, this paper is the current subject of discussion on the

To: The Next Head of the Motion Picture Association of America
This advice for the incoming MPAA head could equally well apply to publishers of educational material. Paraphrased: You've got time to prepare, but not as much as you think. The Napster for your industry is already here - it's called BitTorrent. If you clamp down on downloads you risk alienating your audience. But if you provide good value they are less likely to turn away from you. What is good value? People want their digital media the way they want it: every way imaginable. A subscriber could receive notices of her children's soccer games, park district events, school announcements and newspaper headlines, all of which can help alleviate data overload. These weblog citations from Weblogs in Higher Education and the Inside Learning Web Log continue the questions that were raised in Stephen Downes' forecasts for 2004 about higher education. What is higher education adding for students that they cannot obtain through self-study or guided distance education? Unless colleges and universities add a valuable dimension of personalized teaching through extended personal contacts and guided group interactions then students who attend large institutions are essentially engaged in nothing more than self-study programs in a campus context. Collaborative Mapping
Edward Mac Gillavry has a paper on collaborative mapping that comes at the idea from a different angle than does Matt Haughey's suggestion that someone combine a mapping system with a Slashdot-like system to do collaborative routing: Collaborative mapping is an initiative to collectively produce models of real-world locations online that people can then access and use to virtually annotate locations in space. Mac Gillavry points to two aspects of collaborative mapping: 1. Generating maps by mapping with your feet, so to speak. For example, at Waag.org, you can see maps of Amsterdam genera

How to participate in the OPML aggregator
I've been busy for the last week or so building a new aggregator, one that asks people for the OPML version of their RSS subscription lists, and uses them to build a top-100 ranking, and to let you view the lists for users, all of which is intended to help you and others find new stuff to subscribe to. It's working remarkably well. Yesterday, talking with Jim Moore, a fellow here at Berkman, he said he didn't know how to participate. I said I'd write a how-to that explains for a person with a weblog on the Harvard Law weblog server, how to find your OPML, and ste

The professor is dead
Brian Alger speaks up about his son being victimized by a university department that offers little more than videotaped lectures to hundreds of students, instead of credible teaching. This reminds me of a similar practice at my undergraduate institution in the 1970s: a very famous man was nearing the end of his life, so the department videotaped a semester of his lectures, and after he died they continued to offer his course with graduate students doing the grading. According to the lore...
