Sharing teaching resources / wikis
George H. Williams and others talk about how the big course software systems have trapped good course materials behind the security screens of many campuses, preventing others from learning from and building on what teachers and students have done. He proposes a weblog or wiki site where people can share teaching material, as an alternative: We're all going to be coming up with course materials anyway. Why not collaborate or at least share? He offers, for example, his own...

Your Living Room is Theirs, Not Yours
I moderated
this panel on high-definition TV
at the CES show today, featuring some of the top people from the cable and satellite industries, plus several members of what's quaintly called the "content" business. The topic got around to DRM (digital restrictions management), of course, and the panelists' answers were -- to put it mildly -- unsatisfactory.

Wiki page design
Most wiki pages look much the same, but the folks at Visible Area set a good example otherwise. At first glance I hardly knew I was looking at a wiki, thanks to their use of background colors, content in the left margin, tables of contents, and search box. As I wandered around the site I saw some other nice page design features, including a list of their major topics that appears in both condensed and descriptive versions, and there is even a printer-friendly copy of each page.

Mark nails it. Woe to the CMS vendor who ignores blogs. They'll be like Digital which ignored Compaq or GM which ignored the Japanese car makers. Look for blog systems to get more sophisticated while maintaining their ease of use (most "real" CMSes are unusable). Eventually (2005? 2006?) blog software vendors will acquire CMS vendors just like Compaq bought Digital). From

Overly-pleasant spam
Here's an unanticipated effect of spam. Spam showing up in blog comments increasingly tries to pass itself off as a genuine comment. So, I've been getting spams that say how interesting my blog is and how much they care about what I have to say. How touching! Other comment spam disguises itself in the form of some bromide so generic that it can apply to any blog article and so bland that no one will object to it. For example, "Pamela Woodlake" recently spammed an entry on Andrew Odlyzko's comparison of broadband and cell phone adoption rates with the...

The student becomes a contributor and partner, and, in doing so, gains the perspective and motivation to become an active participant in the quest for knowledge." That's it. That's the model. I don't know how long ASTD has been doing this - it looks like it has been a while - but it's a great service. Wouldn't it also be great if the page allowed users to enter comments on the products they are trying? The extra content would hardly cost ASTD a dime - but would make the location the place to be to scope out new tech. By Various Authors, Learning Circuits,

New Laws Will Make Spam Worse
In my predictions paper a couple of weeks ago I said that new anti-spam laws would effectively legalize spam, making it worse. The laws are in effect now, and the early result is that they are making spam worse. "The US Can Spam Act became law on 1 January, but US email security company Postini saw the proportion of spam rise from 74 per cent in December to 84 per cent within the first couple of days of the new year." I'd like to take some credit for this prediction, but as predictions go, it was a pretty easy one to make. This failure of the legal approach will now force people to think

Social network software.
Social network software has been getting a lot of attention lately. Is it a good thing or not? I think it's always good to add a channel through which people can find you, especially if you are a small business. Some people are suspicious or nervous about sharing their rolodexes. My view is that those who share thrive, those who hoard die. I'm on

In the discussion there is an interesting distinction drawn between the 'organizational' web of "companies, universities, trade associations, consortia, alliances, and government agencies", and the 'analytic web', cons
