Five hundred posts
This is the 500th posting written for this weblog, starting with the enthusiastic and naive opening entry on March 7, 2003. I'm guessing, based on little evidence, that the posts average 250 words, which would add up to 125, 000 words if it were more than a guess. Since March I've come to enjoy daily writing in a way I don't think I've ever experienced before. I've also sometimes wished I didn't have to write, and I've certainly rushed a few entries or grabbed a quick link rather...

Pitter-patter goes my heart
For my birthday this year, I asked my parents for a Polar S120 heart rate monitor, but what with being sick and the frigid and horrible weather, I hadn't had a chance to try it out. Until this afternoon at 3 PM, when I strapped it on to monitor my heart rate while I watched the New England Patriots play the Indianapolis Colts for the AFC Championship, and a trip to the Super Bowl. Below you can see my heart rate during the course of the game, mapped against the score of each team and some key pl

Learning webs: introducing weblogs to support communities
Good news: Learning webs paper is accepted for Web-based communities 2004. The evaluations are very positive, but there are things suggested for an improvement:Even though the authors' account and discussion of blogs as stand alone tools is satisfactory, I find that an explicit discussion of how blogs can be used to support CoP is missing in the manuscript. Thus, I would suggest that the authors write a paragraph discussing the following two points: (

"If someone is that depressed and wants to kill himself because there is no hope of life getting better, I don't see any reason he shouldn't do it. Many times there is no hope of life improving." I paraphrased that from an interesting conversation from a few weeks ago.The person, who I will call Lydia, said the above and also says that she has an easy time accepting people for who or what they are, whatever race, color, creed, sexual orientation...it's easy to accept people. This, I think, is very noble. She also sees no problem letting people do whatever they wan

I had a few humorous moments while playing Battlefield 1942 recently. The first pic shows my jeep after an unfortunate meeting with a tree. I finally got some new music to listen to, so I thought I'd share a few thoughts about some CDs. * Tait - LOVE IT! GET IT! I like this CD better than the first offering from Michael Tait of DC Talk. It's a new "semester" at NBU and I'm deciding what class I might enjoy. I did go to "Who is Jesus? The Doctrine of Christ" course last Wednesday. We had some interesting discussion about who Jesus is and by the end of the course, the instructor would like for us to be able to have a ready answer to the question "Who do you say that I Am?". I'm pondering that as I read scripture and discover new Truths about Him. I know Who Jesus is, but I want to be able to not just "know", but state to anyone who ma

The Top Science Stories of 2003
The Top Science Stories of 2003 ScientificAmerican.comhttp://snipurl.com/3w08"For some, this year in science may be remembered more for its disasters than its successes. On January 16 the space shuttle Columbia launched to great fanfare, only to fail tragically on re-entry 16 days later. Then came news of the mysterious and lethal disease known as SARS, which sparked worldwide panic. And a midsummer blackout stretching from Ontario to New York served as a vivid reminder of how dependent we are on a fragile power grid.

Is eLearning right for you
Is eLearning right for you? This is a "survey" (self-assessment) to see whether eLearning is a good solution for your personal development. It would be ok for someone who is wanting some personal or professional development and is looking for guidance about ways to get it. I'd like to see a similar instrument designed to serve as a methods-means analysis for a given documented need. In my opinion, that would be far more useful. Still, this might be fun to play with if you have a few minutes. -- BB -->

Talking about what makes writing good, composition teacher and scholar William E. Coles, Jr. has sometimes come up with quirky formulations. When asked by a frustrated student what he wanted them to do in their papers, Coles said something like this, "I want what you would want when you were proud of yourself for having wanted it." Speaking this way, he tried to involve his students in the question of what was worth reading or writing, rather than impose an answer. I want...

Tech Industry Giants' Marry Hollywood: You Lose
I've been hoping that the tech industry will bring its better traditions into the living room -- expanding customers' flexibility and creativity, not curbing them. At the giant Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, the evidence was mixed. While new technology is adding some useful features to consumer electronics, tech companies -- by embracing Hollywood-dictated restrictions on how digital content is used -- have allied themselves with a greedy cartel at the expense of their own customers.

Here's the current draft (still under discussion) of the description of the session I'm leading at the O'Reilly Digital Democracy Teach-in: The common wisdom -- that the Internet is just one more tool in the campaign box -- is wrong. Experience so far seems to show that to effectively using the Internet means giving up some of the most basic assumptions about the nature of campaigns as top-down, one-to-many, marketing efforts. This raises more questions than answers: Is the Internet reshaping campaigns, political parties and the electorate? Are the most important effects of the
