Critique of OA
Peter Gregory, Open to interpretation, Chemistry in Britain, December 2003, p. 33 (article not online). A skeptical overview of OA full of misunderstandings e.g. that OA excludes poor authors and OA bypasses peer review. Excerpt: "Open archive initiatives would allow those who can pay to promote their own work, provide industry with a 'free ride', and could result in an overall increase in costs and a reduction in quality and reliability....[Peer review is expensive.] It can, therefore, be argued that abandoning this

Happy Chinese New Year! It's Monkey Year in China's traditional lunar calendar. Monkey means smart, clever and anti-authority in China's culture. I wish all people around the world can have good lucks in this Monkey year. I will leave for Xiamen, Fujian Prov. since there is a 7-day holiday for Chinese New Year. John Kerry's victory in the 2004 Iowa presidential caucuses tells us that politics remains in broadcast mode. We haven't arrived at a technology-fueled, post-broadcast era. But anyone who doubts that the Internet is changing politics in major ways just isn't paying close enough attention.

Subconsciously, People may be Bayesian
DAVID LEONHARDT writes in a NY Times article about people playing the odds of everyday life with Bayesian Analysis. He describes new research, recently published in Nature, "which stands out because it offers a detailed window into how the Bayesian thought process works, showing the point when uncertainty becomes great enough to give past experience an edge over current observation." Bayesian Analysis, among researchers, is "the combining of new information with conventional wisdom." I do agree about their reliance on past observations, but I believe that they have underestimated the role o

Selecting textbooks or pulling teeth?
I don't know which I enjoy least. Textbook selection, especially for fast changing IT courses, is not fun. The technology changes or software gets updated and colleges need to spin to change wheel again. Do you stay with an update of the current text, or do you move to another issue altogether? Textbook publishers typically lag about 6 months behind the changes/updates, so often colleges run outdated versions of software packages. I'm in favor of creating our own textbook and deliver it online, designed to cover those issues and concepts ou

Reed Elsevier Feels Resistance To Web Pricing
