BYOB: Build Your Own Browser
(via "inessential") - Excellent. Hack your own Safari-like browser using WebKit without writing much code! Now if only it was just as easy to hack your own browser using IE or Mozilla. QUOTEThere are a lot of things to like about Apple's Safari web browser -- the stylish user interface (especially the tabs!), SnapBack feature , popup blocker, Google toolbar, and of course, Safari's speed. For developers though, one of the coolest features is hidden under the hood: WebKit -- the Cocoa/Carbon framework that's the basis for Safari.

Blogs on the Campaign Trail
(via
JD
) Interesting AP article on the use of Weblogs in the campaigns. Web journals like Joshua MarshallÂ’s have become indispensable this campaign season: They mobilize supporters, question traditional media coverage and feed the insatiable appetites of political junkies. A powerful new networking tool for the politically plugged-in and hangers-on, the constant online chatter broadens campaign discourse and accelerates the news cycle. Such journals, known as blogs, may not be doing much to sway und

Bird Flu Gets More Worrisome
The world's public health systems are getting better at handling this sort of thing. But we have a real problem with the corporate-run vaccine system that lately hasn't been up to the task of providing what we need and when we need it. Sometimes markets fail. This isn't the kind of situation where failure can remotely be an option.

Comparative literature
Who knows whether Howard Dean's much-discussed speech after the Iowa primary will matter in the long run, but CJR has a column about the ways reporters have described the speech. Bryan Keefer shows how simple comparison can suggest the bias in seemingly factual reporting. Unlike a fair number of articles I've read lately, Keefer names the people he's quoting and doesn't satisfy himself with one or two (seemingly) representative voices -- he investigates in detail by looking at a range...

Low Threshold Applications
Low Threshold Applications.
This is risky territory, in my opinion. It's risky because: (1) Nobody is going to pay any attention to the recommendation that these uses be kept short, and (2) The idea panders to the mass indoctrination view of instruction and design. The attraction is understandable, but that doesn't make it a good solution. Why can't higher ed put some resources into developing "low threshold applications" (simple to use, not much of a learning curve for instructors) that actually help people efficiently learn inst

Narrating PowerPoint Presentations
I'm a fan of Low Threshold Applications (LTAs) because most instructors don't have time to learn more complicated instructional tools. So many instructors use PowerPoint that it's a relatively easy step to assist them to add narration and put their narrated ppt presentations up on the web. As long as these presentations are done carefully and used selectively--and kept fairly short--they can be a useful part of online and hybrid courses. A few years ago we used RealPresenter at Eastern Oregon University for this job, but since RealNetworks has discontinued support of RealPresent
