The Promise of Online Simulations
Good overview of the role simulations can play in learning, including an account of what topics are best taught using simulations - areas where judgement skills, not facts, need to be emphasized. The author also describes features of successful simulations, including feedback and complexity. Simulations haven't been widely used, argues the author because of both technical barriers and a misunderstanding of where they should be applied. Via elearnspace. SCORM and the Art of Specification Maintenance
"SCORM 1.3 is dead, long live SCORM 2004!" Thus begins CETIS's authoritative coverage of the new release, along with this interesting remark: "the first public indications of ADL's desire to hand the present SCORM 'to the community' have surfaced in last week's co-located CEN/ISSS and IEEE LTSC meeting." What's also interesting is that SCORM 2004 isn't really a new version, and that there is a widespread desire (and committment on the part of ADL) to stop making changes to it. But, as the article points out, IMS Simple Sequencing, on which the personalization

Internet Access in U.S. Public Schools and Classrooms: 1994-2002

Auricle has user-selectable RSS Feeds
Auricle is a work-in-progress so from today readers can now select what RSS feed they would like displayed in the right-hand column. Not a big change but there are some exciting possibilities, e.g. selecting what information about a bank of learning objects should be displayed? My current feeds are learning technology/learning resource related. As time allows we will make further improvements.

CSS Validator Changes the Rules
The W3C's CSS validation service has changed the way it interprets CSS authoring practices. Many sites that were designed valid no longer validate. The change in rules affects sites that use the box model hack to compensate for the incorrect CSS implementation in versions of Internet Explorer for Windows prior to IE6. There are thousands of such sites out there.

802.11 is to Wireless what Ethernet is to networking!
Amen! QUOTE While it started as a local-area network technology, today, Ethernet is being used in wide-area networks and even metro-area networks. What's more, it is now being used for voice and video, two applications never envisioned when the standard was introduced. Simply put, 802.11 is to wireless communications what the x86 is to computing and what Ethernet is to networking. This "open-standard radio" is today supported by more than 115 vendors with more than 900 certified products. The collective R&D of Intel, Broadcom, Ci

Kicking the XServe
As the blog turns... Since our MovableType move last month to a new server, a shiny Apple XServe, I'd been noticing that email notifications of trackbacks and comments reported not the IP address of the person who had sent the comment/trackback, but the IP address of the server itself. Hard to block spam roaches by IPs that way! Worse, when I checked the MovableType activity log, all entries were credited to an access from that same IP. Even weirder, the Apache access log was recording correct IPs but the Apache error log was reporting, again, the clients' IP as t

SCORM 1.3 is dead, long live SCORM 2004! It is pretty much the same thing, but the name change indicates some hectic manoeuvering to satisfy the conflicting demands of stability and predictability versus the need to fix issues. The new version is out now. Also, the first public indications of ADL's desire to hand the present SCORM 'to the community' have surfaced in last week's co-located CEN/ISSS and IEEE LTSC meeting.
