We Got a Screen Shot in Syllabus
While on the phone today with Larry Johnson, CEO of the New Media Consortium, he suggested I take a look at the latest issue of Syllabus-- it was sitting on my "maybe I will read some dead trees" pile, but lo and behold, on page 36 is a screen shot from the presentation I did with buddies Brian and D'Arcy for the October 2003 NMC Online Con

Of Human Accomplishment
Making the case that there are objective standards of human greatness requires answering the question, "What defines greatness in human achievement in the sciences or the arts?" The answer? Meaning. Charles Murray: "The sources of energy for accomplishment are a sense of (1) purpose and (2) personal autonomy. The sources for what he calls the content of accomplishment are (3) organizing structure and (4) transcendental goods." Via ArtsJournal. Who Forgot the Learner?
As Charles Churchman pointed out already decades ago, note the authors: "To conceive of knowledge as a collection of information seems to rob the concept of all of its life... Knowledge resides in the user and not in the collection. It is how the user reacts to a collection of information that matters." This forms the basis for this paper's sustained and intelligent criticism of the learning object paradigm as defined by SCOs and SCORM. Social interaction and learning context, they argue, are essential and should not be overlooked. W

We Learning: Social Software and E-Learning, Part II
The second part of this look at social software in e-learning (the first part is here) looks at the mechanics of it: wikis, social network analysis tools, proximity tools and virtual worlds. It's a good discussion, but my recent experiences with Orkut have left me feeling empty - just as content is pointless without conversation, conversation is pointless without context. If the social network gives you nothing to do, then it's about as educationally useful as a wine and cheese party. That shou

Content Delivery in the 'Blogosphere'
George Siemens comments of this item, "Short exploration of blogging as a content delivery tool in education: Content Delivery in the 'Blogosphere'. Personally, I think the article misses the point...blogging is less about content delivery, and more about expression, self-exploration (and in some cases, dialogue)." I agree with this assessment. Blogging isn't about content delivery, it's also about interaction and engagement. Like that fitness link I posted last Friday, blogging is a repeated act of self disclosur

Anthropologie des Strickens?
Paige West, an anthropologist at the Columbia University describes people in urban areas as "alienated from the products of their daily work -- they never see a material product of their labor." But knitting helps, she says, allowing the development of a social relationship between objects and people, as well as providing a material byproduct of their efforts. "People can develop a social relationship with the objects and the people" allowing "some sort of production from which you can see the sensuous item straight away". [via Yahoo

VeriSign to Relaunch Loathed SiteFinder
Washington Post: VeriSign Reconsiders Search Service. The problem, critics have said, is that given VeriSign's role as the operator of the dot-com and dot-net registries, the Site Finder service causes repercussions throughout the Internet. VeriSign tells computers, wireless phones and other products that use the Internet where they can find dot-com and dot-net addresses -- and when an address does not exist. Never thought I'd say this, but the Super Bowl got me thinking. Why shouldn't every advertiser release every print, audio, or multimedia ad they create under a Creative Commons license? Choose BY-NC-ND, and make clear you're protecting your trademark. Forget the cultural effect -- I'm talking pure business: What principle drives someone to enforce the full copyright in a work they'd normally pay millions to get in front of people's faces? Isn't it irrational NOT to free up distribution completely? Or am I missing something?
