Attention Fatigue and the Effect of Debriefing in a Web-Enhanced Graduate Nursing Course In a lecture, attention and learning degrade rapidly unless techniques are used to periodically refresh or redirect the learner?s attention, or heighten or vary level of interaction. There are similar needs in distance learning to vary the repertoire to avoid attention fatigue and loss of motivation. In the teaching-learning transaction, instructor attributes include charisma and challenge while learner attributes include commitment and time. Creating and Testing Teaching/Learning Strategies for the Virtual Classroom Whether developed from a theoretical base or an empirical base, research is necessary to test the viability of teaching strategies individually and in combination. This paper reminds us that interactive television is effective for student centered learning. Money rolls, cars and code IT Manager's Journal gives seven open source business strategies for competitive advantage. The Optimization Strategy: Use open, modular and conformable architecture to drive optimized applications of greater value up the software stack. i.e. Oracle's 9i database running on top of Linux. De asini umbra disceptare The Cheese Boutique, our local gourmet food store, gives out these pale yellow notepads, and I noticed the other day the words "De gustibus......" printed at the bottom of each page. VON Canada 2004 - fair game Just got back from VON Canada 2004, held in Markham from May 18-20. Not the best conference I've been to, I'm afraid. Hard copies of the presentations were absent. I know Outlook is a memory hog, but... "Do not archive your mail. 30 days. This is not something that you get to decide. This is company policy." - VP Jim Allchin's email to Microsoft employees during antitrust litigation from Burst.com in 2000. Lawyers claim the directive was to "save computer memory space". "There is very little reason for anyone to throw anything away...You can store every conversation you have ever had, from the time you are born to the time you die." - Microsoft Research leader Rick Rashid at WWW 2004, describing MSR initiatives in capturing your entire life via technology. Enterprise attitude beyond this point I find that VoIP, hypermedia, and open source have similar characteristics and objectives: they are all based on a decentralized network of users, sport an advanced form of modular flexibility, and they all are disruptive technologies that obsolesce the middleman monopolies - the telcos, the mainstream media, and the software corps, respectively. So it didn't suprise me very much for VON Canada 2004 to have a panel titled, "Blogging, Wikis and Twikis in the Enterprise". Unfortunately, it also didn't surprise me to see only nine attendees in the room, myself included. Half of them did From silentblue | Quantified on May 23, 2004 at 9:03 p.m..

Court of Common Usage: How Webfeed's Faring, So Far... The term "webfeed," which won the recent CONTENTIOUS RSS feed nickname contest, has been showing up in some interesting places. I wouldn't say it's exactly catching on like wildfire, but so far it does seem to offer some attraction in various parts of the online world. We'll see how this unfolds over time. Here's a quick list of some examples of "webfeed" being used in recent online discourse, as well as some opinions both favoring and criticizing the nickname, plus a bit about how people are getting exp From Contentious Weblog on May 23, 2004 at 9:01 p.m..

Comments Temporarily Suspended (Sorry!) I hope – and I dearly pray – that somewhere there is a very special hell for spammers – especially the virulent sleazoids who post comment spam to weblogs. Custom Webfeeds: Content to Support Customer Relationships For a while now, customer relationship management (CRM) technology has been all the rage in all sorts of organizations. The general idea is to efficiently and effectively manage what you know about your customers in order to communicate with them better and thus strengthen their connection to your company. Ideally, this leads to increased sales and lower cost of service. The problem is, most CRM systems are implemented abysmally. They often end up harming customer relationships en masse, rather than helping them individually – mostly due to hamhanded automated communication From Contentious Weblog on May 23, 2004 at 9:01 p.m..

Many Bloggers Surrendering to Comment Spammers Yesterday I reluctantly decided that, due to massive levels of comment spam and the inadequacy of my present blogging software to combat this plague, I'm temporarily suspending comments on CONTENTIOUS. Well, I'm not the only blogger who's had to take this unfortunate step. Recently, many bloggers have announced that they are shutting down their comments function, either temporarily or permanently. I truly hate to see this happen because it diminishes public discourse. Also, bloggers are fleeing in dr From Contentious Weblog on May 23, 2004 at 9:01 p.m..

Yes, Lawyers CAN Write! If you've ever had to slog through a document written in dense legalese, the old joke "What do you call 500 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? Most lawyers create weblogs as marketing for their practices. For instance... (Full story, with links...) From Contentious Weblog on May 23, 2004 at 9:01 p.m..

Coravue Clarifies Its Personalized Webfeeds Yesterday I wrote about how customer relationship management (CRM) vendor b>Coravue announced that it's adding personalized webfeed capability to its CRM package – which I think is a great idea. Loaded Words and Tortured Definitions Can actions really speak louder than words, when speech is the realm of words? The words we choose to describe actions play a key role in shaping perspectives, opinions, and responses. When it comes to the great evils of this world – torture, genocide, war, and so on – it seems to me that muted words often are selected to publicly describe and discuss what happened – and what should be done in response. This is not always a deliberate propaganda tactic. Indeed, some words, like "torture," are inherently loaded. Avoiding loaded language often reflects an effort to avoi From Contentious Weblog on May 23, 2004 at 9:01 p.m..

Same-Day Global Papers, at the Library The academic libraries of my memory subscribed to a limited selection of newspapers from around the world -- and like a newsstand, the issues were typically in hand days or weeks after publication.
