French Ontario in the 17th and 18th centuries This web site published by the Archives of Ontario looks at the French history of Ontario in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The site explores the early history of New France and French exploration into the pays d'en haut, as the Great Lakes region was then known. Users will find a good range of digitised primary sources, including maps, paintings, documents and photographs. These are used to illustrate the chapters, which cover explorations, making contact with First Nations, resources and trade, war and defence, Detroit, and transitions. Documents from the front : the American Civil War and Fenian raids in the 1860s This Documents from the Front web site is published as part of the Archives of Ontario's online exhibitions collection. The site looks at Ontario during the 1860s, when it was known as Canada West, focusing particularly on the Canadian experience of the American Civil War and the Fenian Raids near Fort Erie in 1866. Two collections held at the Archives of Ontario have been partially digitised for the web site. These are the Darroch Collection, comprised of fifty rare letters from Canadians serving in the American Civil War, and the Willson Acquisition. The great Toronto fire This interesting web site looks at the fire that took place in Toronto in April 1904, exploring an interesting aspect of urban history. It is published by the Archives of Ontario, and provides an interactive history of the fire that destroyed over 100 buildings and caused more than 10 million dollars of damage. The site looks at how the fire started and the factors that helped it to spread so easily and quickly. There is a slide show of photographs showing the aftermath of the fire, a display of models showing the route of the fire, and an animation showing how it spread.
