Taking as his example Charles Dickens' 'Bleak House', the author of the site, Prof. Martin Daunton, discusses the representation of Victorian social conditions in fictional accounts, and why such representations and interpretations should be of interest to historians. Lewis Morris and William Morris sea charts This web page is published as part of the National Library of Wales online Treasures collection. It features digitised copies of eighteenth century sea charts of the Welsh coast, made by hydrographer Lewis Morris. Also on the site are the early nineteenth century revisions made to the charts by his son William Morris. The charts cover the entire Welsh coast and over twenty-five harbour plans, and their appearance marked a significant improvement in the marine survey of the Welsh Coast. Marbles Reunited Marbles Reunited is a British-based group co-ordinating the campaign activites of a number of individuals and groups who wish to see the repatriation of the Psrthenon sculptures, currently housed in the British Museum. It thus serves as an organising body for establised groups such as Parthenon 2004 and the British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles. Letters from David Lloyd George to his brother The National Library of Wales publishes this online database of letters from British Prime Minister David Lloyd George to his brother William George. They are part of the William George Papers purchased by the National Library in 1989. The database contains 3,292 letters written over a period of more than fifty years, from 1886 to 1943. The majority of the letters are from the years prior to 1917. The letters can be browsed by date, but they are not always easy to read and there are no transcriptions available, which would have been useful. Autobiography of a smuggler Autobiography of a Smuggler is published as part of the National Library of Wales online Treasures collection. On the site users will find a digitised copy of William Owen's eighteenth century autobiography of his life as a smuggler in Wales. The book is 176 pages long and has been completely digitised, although there is no transcription available. This is a rare document because criminal biographies were rare in eighteenth century Wales, and also because it features a full transcription of Owen's trial for murder in 1747. On it is published a digitised copy of an early seventeenth century pamphlet, describing the sighting of a mermaid in Pendine, Carmarthenshire. The pamphlet is eight pages long and quite easy to read, and can be resized for different views. It would be useful if there were also a transcription of the document though. Dolley Madison was the influential wife of US president James Madison. The electronic archive makes available a large corpus of letters addressed to or from Dolley Madison and spanning the years 1788-1836.
