Innovation and Idea Protectionism
Albert Ip talks about the reality of developing new products, and then dealing with lawyers and patent issues. In these days of patent lock-up, it is NOT about publishing the achievement and improvement. My patent lawyer told me the other day, it is about limiting other people's use of your idea. Hence this concept of patent portfolio and mutual licensing. He advised me to break my invention into several patents in order to sta From

TV and the Net
(This is also my
Sunday column in the
San Jose Mercury News.) Media junkies have felt a small shiver of anticipation from recent press reports pointing to a linkup between NetFlix, the mail-order video-rental company, and TiVo, the hard-disk home video system. Maybe we'll soon see the NetFlix catalog made available via the Internet. The idea definitely has some allure. Anything that lets us avoid a trip to the video-rental store, while simultaneously offering more From

The Toxic Foxification of News
Frank Rich (NY Times):
This Time Bill O'Reilly Got It Right. No matter how long the overlap between Mr. Carville and Mr. Begala's TV and campaign roles, that brand and CNN itself are now as inextricably bound to the Democrats as Fox is to the Republicans. The network has succeeded in an impossible feat -- ceding Mr. O'Reilly the moral high ground. The Bush campaign doesn't have to enlist Fox hosts for its staff since they're willing to whore for it From

Kyoto is Dead - Long Live Pragmatism
There's troubling news (FT subscription reqd, alternate copy here) coming from Japan, where the Kyoto protocol on Greenhouse Emissions was born in 1997. It seems that the Japanese aren't going to be able to meet their emissions targets specified in the agreement in time. Indeed, unless they buy a "large quantity" of emissions credits from other countries, they're not going to be able to meet their commitment at all. Taishi Sugiyama, a climate expert at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in Japan, said emissions were rising 1 per cent a year due From

The Pitch
I got a msg from the Bush campaign (I'm a member of GOP TeamLeader) touting an HBO movie, 9 Innings from Ground Zero. The msg links to a clip about Bush throwing out the first pitch. In it, W lets us know the pressure on him not to "bounce" it. I can see why the Republicans are circulating it. It's a good piece of tape, in a patriotic-cum-Riefenstahl sense. And, on the other hand, it's maybe the most absurd reduction of a serious issue I have ever seen. You want to see American political cynicism at its worst? This is... From

Just arrived to AOIR 5.0, at workshop on qualitative research methodology. Defense Against the DoS/DDoS Attacks on Cisco Routers
Cisco routers are said to have a market share of over 90% in the Internet. They are used widely by most large companies and agencies all over the world, and are considered as the most important building blocks of the Internet. But, Cisco routers have several vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to disrupt Internet traffic, intercept sensitive information such as passwords and credit card numbers or redirect traffic from web sites. Securing the router is the first thing that network administrators need to do. From

Trademark violations are not spelling errors
Microsoft Word corrects many of my typos and misspellings as I type. I'm not sure exactly how I turned it on, how to turn it off, or where the list of errors is maintained, but it's pretty helpful. ...Except that it corrects my trademark violations. For example, if I type "laundromat," it goes tut-tut and changes it to "Laundromat." I violate trademarks with pride and I don't want to be in a culture war with my word processor. Besides, is Microsoft going to issue a patch so it slaps a trademark on "That's hot" now that Paris Hilton has trademarked... From
