New Trend Emerging in E-learning: UGC Chief
I think we knew this already, but coverage of a vice-chancellors' meeting in Margaro shows that awareness of e-learning has reached India's university administrations, and (with a little help from the major IT companies) Indian universities are preparing to push forward. Microsoft Arabia signs MOU to Bring Partners in Learning Initiative to Saudi Arabia
E-Learning in Saudi Arabia will look like Windows, at least for the immediate future, as the government of that country has signed a deal with Microsoft to provide e-learning support. "The agreement included four main protocols which are Teacher Training, E-Learning Gateway, The Digital Curriculum and finally the Data Center." This indicates a trend, which has largely been below the radar, of major software companies working at ministerial level to define the shape of e-learning in Asia. Impressions of WebCT
In my self-styled 'Rampage Across Australia' tour I have been touting the benefits of 'small' e-learning and questioning the value of large learning management systems. It's not just me - check out this post from DEOS-L on experiences with WebCT Vista. My message is Chris Sessum's: "Spend your money on web designers, artists, simulation experts, people who can assist you in making your online vision possible. If you can avoid VISTA, it would be my recommendation to do so." (In fairness, there were some

Web Services What Web Services?
The author goes exploring for web services and finds some. Good article - it begins with an overview of web services and what their promise is supposed to be for education. He then locates various links and examples illustrating what web services can do. I am not convinced about web services, but this article gives me a lot of food for thought. I just wish, with the author, that we had some samples - not just reference implementations, but actual code, from both the service delivery end and the service use end, and not in Java but in code (such as Perl or PHP) that the average person can use ( From

Napster was not only hot because of the easy sharing of MP3 files - but also because of finding interesting music in libraries of people with similar taste. Now that Napster is dead the P2P-netowkrs have taken over - but they don't really offer something that comes close to Napster (although browsing a remote host in Aquisition comes close). So what other ideas people come up with to break the hegemony of the music bosses? Audioscrobbler (

AudioVox: never again
A couple months ago, I bought this cool new phone by Audiovox -- the CMD8900. The speaker then quit working. I returned it to the store I had bought it at (New Wireless, 107 West Portal Ave) at the end of August. Last week, when it was still not back, I called and asked why. New Wireless informed me all Audiovox repairs take "30 to 45 days." I found that hard to believe, so I went to the Audiovox website, and posted a question asking whether that was true. CBS on "appropriate"
So CBS thought it was appropriate to run a

It's Yom Kippur. My family is in shul, but I'm here blogging. I'm also fasting, but that's because I'm a meta-agnostic: I'm not sure if I don't know if there's a G-d. Yom Kippur is about getting beyond all the crappiness we humans have managed to do to one another in the past year and starting again. It's not a free pass. You have to make right what you've made wrong. But, the relationship isn't symmetrical: You don't get to demand justice from those lousy bastards who treated you like dirt. You forgive them. Some questions and answers about cooking
Folks have written asking some questions about how I'm making the transition from geek to chef, and rather than reply individually, I thought I'd do a little public Q & A to share with all. I am curious what steps you took to make the change. You're cooking in the kitchen of a good restaurant? When I first arrived on Nantucket I met the owners of Fifty-Six Union through my aunt. Over the course of the summer, I talked with them about my interest in cooking and spent some time hostessing during August. Department of Homeland Security Prevents Terrorist from Entering the U.S.
As we all know, since September 11, 2001 the U.S. has been much more vigilant in defending itself against terrorist attacks. In addition to bombing the shit out of the Middle East, we have also established the Department of Homeland Security whose responsibility it is to defend us from terrorists. They have so far done a stellar job, as the U.S. has yet to be hit by another terrorist attack. But the ever-vigilant Department of Homeland Security is not resting on its laurels. Recently, they prevented the terrorist supporter Yusef Islam from entering the United States. From

Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m. after a somewhat frenzied night of preparations for Hurricane Jeanne. This storm is moving so much faster than Frances that the time available for getting ready is significantly less than what we had before.
