Group As User: Flaming and the Design of Social Software[...] The design gap between computer-as-box and computer-as-door persists because of a diminished conception of the user. The user of a piece of social software is not just a collection of individuals, but a group. Individual users take on roles that only make sense in groups: leader, follower, peacemaker, process nazi, and so on. There From

Look for me on the streets of NYC
So if you're going to be cheering tomorrow, here's what I'll be wearing. I'm in the orange start group, which means I'll be running up the left side of Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn. I'm going to stick on the left-hand side of the street (my left) and try and stay out of the middle, so if you're looking for me, that's where I hope to be. I'm going to run something between a 10 - 11 minute/mile, so I should be coming into Manhattan around 1 PM or so, depending on how long it takes to get across the start. My bib number is 31139 so if you're watchi From

which tool - be aware of your contract
Unbelievable but imaginable. I wonder if comparable sanctions will show up at other places in the near future (the U of Vienna bought WebCT some time ago). A university is about economics after all. I mean after all it is about a few things but economics as well. The lesson learned it to sign contracts only if they permit you the freedom to use the tools of your choice for teaching and research. 69 Years Later, Is It Happening Here?
Before 1984, before The Handmaid's Tale, before either the movie or the book by Stephen King, there was Sinclair Lewis' It Can't Happen Here. Lewis' vision of an American descent into Fascism is as fresh and disturbing today as it was when it was written in 1935. Check out the full text online, and consider with me the continuing relevance of this 69 year old warning. From

Sorry everybody
Most people who think carefully understand that Americans are not really any more jingoistic or xenophobic than people in other countries, but it never hurts to reinforce, especially considering what happened on November 2nd, 2004. What must it have looked like to the world outside our borders? America proudly re-appointed her reckless, incompetent and corrupt government. How much of America? Fifty-two percent. The rest of us are aghast and dismayed. Lots of fuss is made about the 'global village.' The Internet was supposed to make communication between cultur From

Barlow on magnanimous victory
John Perry Barlow makes the case, eloquently as always, for reaching out, understanding, tolerance and forgiveness. Oh, you can see the thread of anger weaving through as well, but, that's the struggle so many of us are engaged in. Me, too, although I can see why you might think otherwise given my mood the past few days. I'm not as sanguine as JP. For some segment of the population - how large? I honestly don't know - the argument they just won wasn't over policy differences so much as over the nature of the middle ground itself. It seems to... From

It has been quite silent here the last month. I was very busy and blogging had to be suspended for a while. This will change soon - there have been a lot of things going on. Here's what is up next: 1. Election in US: a very bad decision to re-elect Bush. But it seems Bush is not the problem, but the symptom: I think the religious subtext of the Bush approval is really a challenge and it will be a problem for the next two decades. 2. Analyzing the Election Data from Ohio
Like many of you, I spent a long time watching the election returns come in, and I saw the election eventually handed to George Bush. I saw exit polls that did not correspond to the results in certain states. I heard about the diebold president talking about using his machines to turn the election. I have spent a long time over the past day checking information about the election, information from 2000, comparing data. And after all of this, I feel I am able to post a list of some questionable data that I have seen: From
