Overview of Teaching Strategies

Overview of Teaching Strategies

There many, many teaching strategies. Each strategy can be subdivided into numerous activities (for example, a discussion is a strategy but the discussion could be planned using any of the following activities -- in pairs, small groups, class, panel, oral, on paper, in-class, out-of-class). It is not the intention of this course to teach you new strategies, however, its intent is to remind you of those you already know about. Another course (Advanced Instructional Methods) will address strategies in much more detail.

Remember active learning is remembered longer than passive learning. There is a time and place for a lecture but there many times for other strategies to be used.

The learning objectives for this section are:

  1. Learner will become familiar with a number of teaching strategies
  2. Learners will classify a number of teaching strategies
  3. Learners will be able to discuss various transfer-of-learning strategies
  4. Learners will be able to describe the relationship between objectives and teaching strategies
  5. Learners will be able to discuss various delivery modes

There are four parts to teaching strategies. They are

  1. An introduction to teaching strategies
  2. Classifying strategies
  3. Transfer-of-learning strategies
  4. Objectives and strategies

As you move through this section, keep asking yourself how you will use these ideas in your present and/or teaching.
