TinCan was the code name for the Experience API
before it was called Experience API or XAPI and
released by the ADL Initiative in January 2013.
The ADL Initiative already brought us SCORM.
The Big
Question
How to improve interoperability between
live tools, services and systems?
The not so Big
Questions
How to build with various tools and
services complex and attractive
learning environments?
How to create more exciting
learning experiences?
A few Words of Warning
• I will talk about prototypes and data structures.
• You need a basic understanding of
• Virtual learning environments
• Modern Web-applications
• Interoperability standards
• Interactive systems
• Sensor networks
• Indeed, I will talk about prototypes and data structures!
Things will not work with your VLE at home.
(I may help you if you ask nicely)

How to create more exciting
learning experiences?
Learning Experiences
• Any performance that contributes to personal
learning.
• They can involve other people.
• They can happen everywhere.
• They can include various technologies and
media.
• Measurable and quantifiable
• Contributes to evidence of learning
What Problem does the
XAPI Solve?
• Educational technologies are more divers than 10-15
years ago.
• Increasing number of specialized tools, services and
devices are used for learning but are hard to integrate
with VLEs on a procedural level.
• Most interoperability standards for E-learning focus on
integrated platforms and not mash-up environments.
• Emerging practices and advanced learning processes
receive little support.

Mobile Mashups for Learning by Christian Glahn, has 39 slides with 2981 views. This document discusses mobile mashups for learning. It finds that smartphones have high penetration rates among young adults and trainees. Most people now use multiple devices on a daily basis. The author argues that mobile learning solutions should support this reality by integrating across different technologies and services, rather than focusing on single devices. An example called Mobler Cards is presented, which leverages the power of learning management systems to deliver micro learning activities to students' mobile devices. Several mobile mashup scenarios are proposed, such as delivering homework, group activities, exercises for online courses, and audience-specific assignments through an LMS.

Awareness, Feedback, Self-regulation by Christian Glahn, has 35 slides with 3721 views. This document reviews and integrates models of feedback, self-regulation, and situational awareness from two sources. It presents simplified feedback loops showing how actors monitor their own behavior and use feedback to reflect and respond. More complex cognitive models are then shown integrating concepts like goals, strategies, knowledge, and beliefs. Examples are given of how reflective practitioners can be viewed as self-regulated learners engaging in reflection before, during, and after tasks. Levels of situational awareness are also summarized, from basic perception to comprehension and projection.

Html5 for mobiles by Christian Glahn, has 28 slides with 8763 views.HTML5 enables the creation of mobile applications for learning through web applications. It allows a single application to work across multiple devices, reducing development costs. Key HTML5 features like offline caching, storage, geolocation, and multi-touch APIs allow mobile web apps to work offline, store user data, adapt to location, and support touch interactions. Examples of how HTML5 could be used include social networking apps, personal learning environments, knowledge exchange apps, and augmented reality apps. If native device functions are needed, frameworks like PhoneGap or Titanium can integrate those features.

Immersive Community Analytics for Wearable Enhanced Learning (HCI Internation... by IstvanKoren, has 10 slides with 285 views.Nowadays, we can use immersive interaction and display technologies in collaborative analytical reasoning and decision making scenarios. In order to support heterogeneous professional communities of practice in their digital transformation, it is necessary not only to provide the technologies but to understand the work practices under transformations as well as the security, privacy and other concerns of the communities. Our approach is a comprehensive and evolutionary socio-technological learning analytics and design process leading to a flexible infrastructure where professional communities can co-create their wearable enhanced learning solution. In the core, we present a multi-sensory fusion recorder and player that allows the recordings of multi-actor activity sequences by human activity recognition and the computational support of immersive learning analytics to support training scenarios. Our approach enables cross-domain collaboration by fusing, aggregating and visualizing sensor data coming from wearables and modern production systems. The software is open source and based on the outcomes of several national and international funded projects.

Next Generation Teaching and Learning by Charles Severance, has 50 slides with 1330 views. The document discusses the next generation of digital learning environments (NGDLE). It argues that the NGDLE will not be a single application like current learning management systems, but rather an ecosystem of learning applications from an app store. Standards like IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) and the emerging IMS Content Item and CASA App Store specifications will allow learning applications from different vendors to integrate and interoperate within the NGDLE ecosystem. The NGDLE is predicted to have over 100,000 learning applications accessible to teachers and students.

Empowering Teachers with More Pluggable Educational Technology by Charles Severance, has 47 slides with 536 views.Teachers are often greatly limited in the educational technology they can use in their classes because it becomes increasingly complex to use on the web software from many different vendors. Students must get a separate account for each new system, teachers need to jump between systems to assess and grade student work and transfer grades between the different systems. Thorough the IMS Global Learning Consortium (www.imsglobal.org), the marketplace is developing standards that will allow course rosters and roles to be moved from one system to another and for graded to be moved between systems without rewiring hand-copying of data between systems. The new standard is called 'IMS Learning Tools Interoperability'. For example if your school uses Moodle and you would like to use www.chemvantage.org for Chemistry homework, you can simply 'plug' ChemVantage into Moodle and the rest is handled automatically. This presentation will introduce IMS Learning Tools Interoperability at a very high level and show some demonstrations of it working with Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard. Designing for insight by Aaron Silvers, has 29 slides with 972 views. There's a paradigm shift that follows the use of the Experience API. The shift comes from seeking insights on how effective our designed experiences are versus judgments about how well people learn from them. This change in mindset focuses on the outcomes from the audience that manifest in observable ways, mapped directly to our design assertions. It's not about xAPI or any specific technology - it's about modeling our design to get the insights we need to improve our design.

Adaptive Learning Experiences across Devices: Leveraging Multi-Modal Learnin... by Christian Glahn, has 28 slides with 315 views. The educational technological landscape is changing as new generations of students enter the educational system at the different levels. The conventional "one interface rules them all" does no longer fit the technological habitat of millennials. Therefore, educational and learning has to broaden their views on digital learning experiences across a wide range of devices. This presentation sets the stage for this process that relies heavily on interoperability and standards, so that new technologies can be easily integrated into learning experiences. One of such standards is XAPI that has been tested in the field with adaptive experiences across devices. This is presented on 29 Nov 2019 at OnlineEduca Berlin.

Usage of communication, social media, and audio/visual apps on smartphones has remained consistent. Smartwatch ownership is low but growing. The digital ecosystem of students is shifting as new connected devices emerge and older standalone devices decline. Future research should expand to non-mobile devices and contexts of educational and general technology use.

YSPH VMOC Special Report - Measles Outbreak Southwest US 4-19-2025 - 1300 HR... by Yale School of Public Health - The Virtual Medical Operations Center (VMOC), has 18 slides with 543 views.A measles outbreak originating in West Texas has been linked to confirmed cases in New Mexico, with additional cases reported in Oklahoma and Kansas. 61 individuals have required hospitalization, and 3 deaths, 2 children in Texas and 1 adult in New Mexico. These fatalities mark the first measles-related deaths in the United States since 2015 and the first pediatric measles death since 2003. The YSPH Virtual Medical Operations Center Briefs (VMOC) were created as a service-learning project by faculty and graduate students at the Yale School of Public Health in response to the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. Each year, the VMOC Briefs are produced by students enrolled in Environmental Health Science Course 581 - Public Health Emergencies: Disaster Planning and Response. These briefs compile diverse information sources – including status reports, maps, news articles, and web content– into a single, easily digestible document that can be widely shared and used interactively. Key features of this report include: - Comprehensive Overview: Provides situation updates, maps, relevant news, and web resources. - Accessibility: Designed for easy reading, wide distribution, and interactive use. - Collaboration: The “unlocked" format enables other responders to share, copy, and adapt it seamlessly. The students learn by doing, quickly discovering how and where to find critical information and presenting it in an easily understood manner.
