RightsML
Publishers need to express rights on the uses of content
Often need to enforce rights on behalf of 3rd parties
Clients need to know permissions and restrictions
Rights are a key criteria for selecting content
RightsML is an IPTC standard, based on ODRL
http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML
http://www.w3.org/community/odrl
Machine processable permissions, restrictions and duties
Derived from media industry requirements
Can be embedded within content (e.g. G2, ATOM) or stand alone
Designed for automatic evaluation
ODRL v2

The ODRL model is designed to be encoded in various formats
So far, only the XML encoding has been standardized...

Driving Adoption
• Working with W3C CG to refine and simplify ODRL 2.0
• Provide more examples and templates
• Create a reference implementation of RightsML software
• Address RightsML in binaries via ODRL in JSON
© 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 7
Examples and Templates
• Lots of work on documentation
– http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML
• Simple restrictions examples, designed to be templates
– Geography
– Time
– Distribution channel
– Default “read the editors’ notes”
– Action
– Duty to pay
– http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-Examples-Simple-Cases
• Re-worked the original examples
– http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-10-Implementation-Examples
– Using the “simple” examples as building blocks
© 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 8
Refining ODRL
• Working with ODRL W3C CG
– Simplify, enhance ODRL
– Improve documentation
• Adding profile attribute
• Adding datatype and unit to constraints
• Slim down the Common Vocabulary
– Remove terms that really belong in their own profiles
– OMA
– CC / CCREL
– ONIX
• IPTC-sponsored legal review of Common Vocabulary
© 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 9
Introducing the “licensed” Library
• Create ODRL and RightsML documents
• Supports XML and JSON encodings
– Targets the “to be approved” XML encoding
– Ontology support on the roadmap
• Experimental pure Python library
– Implementations in Javascript and Java planned
• https://github.com/iptc/rightsml-dev/tree/master/licensed
• Helped me discover (and fix) various problems
– In both ODRL specs and RightsML documentation
© 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 10
Rights in Binaries
• Rights metadata for photo and video
– An id linking to a registry with rights metadata is one approach
– Embedding rights metadata in binaries needs to be supported
• Express ODRL and hence RightsML in JSON
– Easy to embed in XMP (unlike RDF or XML)
– Designed to be simpler, more “natural” JSON, akin to NINJS
– Try it out and provide feedback
– Drafted within W3C ODRL Community Group
– http://www.w3.org/community/odrl/work/json/
© 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 11
Rights and IPTC Photo Metadata
• Next IPTC Photo Metadata update will add support
– http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-Requirements-for-Embedding-
Rights-in-Binaries
– A field and a way to convey how to handle it (e.g. MIME type)
• XMP already supports 3+ rights representations
– CC, PLUS, PRISM
– What should providers do? Recipients?
– How should rights in XMP be displayed e.g. in Adobe panels?

RightsML and the iptc.org website
• RightsML added to the “main” iptc.org website
• http://www.iptc.org/site/RightsML/
• Continues to be documented in detail on the “dev” site
• http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML

How to Drive Adoption?
• What are the hurdles preventing adoption?
• Is there anything else that IPTC can do to help?

The History of Artificial Intelligence: From Ancient Ideas to Modern Algorithms by isoftreview8, has 27 slides with 45 views. The history of Artificial Intelligence: From Ancient Ideas to Modern Algorithms is a remarkable journey through time—one that blends human curiosity with technological breakthroughs. While the dream of intelligent machines dates back to ancient civilizations, it wasn’t until the 20th century that the idea began to take scientific shape. In 1950, British mathematician Alan Turing introduced a revolutionary concept: that machines could imitate human thought. His creation of the "Turing Test" provided a framework for measuring machine intelligence. This milestone was one of the first major chapters in the history of Artificial Intelligence: From Ancient Ideas to Modern Algorithms. By 1956, the term "Artificial Intelligence" had been officially coined during the Dartmouth Conference, igniting decades of innovation. From symbolic AI in the 1960s to expert systems in the 1980s, and the rise of machine learning and neural networks in the 1990s and 2000s, each era brought us closer to what we now recognize as modern AI. Technologies like deep learning, real-time automation, and natural language processing have turned AI into a powerful tool used in everyday life. The ongoing evolution in the history of Artificial Intelligence: From Ancient Ideas to Modern Algorithms reveals how ancient visions are becoming today’s realities—and tomorrow’s possibilities.

Whitepaper-API-Design-Best-Practices. Prowess software services by Prowess Software Services Inc, has 13 slides with 20 views. With the onset of digital transformation journeys for enterprises across the world, APIs have become a natural strategy for enterprises to provide access to their products and services. APIs enable easy communication and integration of various systems that help accomplish enterprise business goals. What was once a sizeable undertaking of building custom code that involved understanding the internals of other systems, building, and configuring the adapters, has now become an API-based integration that is both easy and familiar for the developer community to integrate with. It is safe to say that if API is not part of the strategy for the product or a service, the real business value of the product may never be realized.

CLI, HTTP, GenAI and MCP telemetry/observability in Java by Pavel Vlasov, has 27 slides with 36 views. This presentation demonstrates Nasdanika telemetry/observability capabilities for CLI, HTTP, GenAI and MCP in Java. With these capabilities you can build observable custom Java-based CLI tools, including MCP & HTTP servers, deployed to workstations, build pipelines, servers, Docker images, etc. and track usage of individual commands and their use of other resources - HTTP, AI Chat and Embeddings, MCP servers. You can also track MCP and HTTP server requests. The CLI approach allows to leverage CPUs/GPUs of local workstations and local LLMs. While local LLMs may not be very fast, they can be used in a batch mode, e.g. overnight. For example, generating code, analyzing merge requests, or tailoring resumes for job postings (using a CrewAI example - https://nasdanika-knowledge.github.io/crew-ai-visual-synopsis/tailor-job-applications/index.html). Also, CLI-based tools can be used to deliver fine-grained functionality specific to a particular group of people. For example, a custom bundled RAG/Chat on top of a document base for, say, mortgage agents.

IPTC Rights Working Group Summer 2014

  • 1. Rights Expression Working Group Stuart Myles * Associated Press * 16th June 2014 http://www.flickr.com/photos/26226551@N00/10753739865/
  • 2. RightsML Publishers need to express rights on the uses of content Often need to enforce rights on behalf of 3rd parties Clients need to know permissions and restrictions Rights are a key criteria for selecting content RightsML is an IPTC standard, based on ODRL http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML http://www.w3.org/community/odrl Machine processable permissions, restrictions and duties Derived from media industry requirements Can be embedded within content (e.g. G2, ATOM) or stand alone Designed for automatic evaluation
  • 3. ODRL v2 © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 3 The Core ODRL model supports permissions, restrictions and duties http://www.w3.org/community/odrl/two/model/
  • 4. ODRL Encoding (1/3) © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 4 The ODRL model is designed to be encoded in various formats So far, only the XML encoding has been standardized... http://www.w3.org/community/odrl/two/xml/
  • 5. ODRL Encoding (2/3) There is an official draft for an ODRL ontology http://www.w3.org/ns/odrl/2/ © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 5
  • 6. ODRL Encoding (3/3) And an updated draft for ODRL in JSON http://www.w3.org/community/odrl/work/json/ © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 6
  • 7. Driving Adoption • Working with W3C CG to refine and simplify ODRL 2.0 • Provide more examples and templates • Create a reference implementation of RightsML software • Address RightsML in binaries via ODRL in JSON © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 7
  • 8. Examples and Templates • Lots of work on documentation – http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML • Simple restrictions examples, designed to be templates – Geography – Time – Distribution channel – Default “read the editors’ notes” – Action – Duty to pay – http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-Examples-Simple-Cases • Re-worked the original examples – http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-10-Implementation-Examples – Using the “simple” examples as building blocks © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 8
  • 9. Refining ODRL • Working with ODRL W3C CG – Simplify, enhance ODRL – Improve documentation • Adding profile attribute • Adding datatype and unit to constraints • Slim down the Common Vocabulary – Remove terms that really belong in their own profiles – OMA – CC / CCREL – ONIX • IPTC-sponsored legal review of Common Vocabulary © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 9
  • 10. Introducing the “licensed” Library • Create ODRL and RightsML documents • Supports XML and JSON encodings – Targets the “to be approved” XML encoding – Ontology support on the roadmap • Experimental pure Python library – Implementations in Javascript and Java planned • https://github.com/iptc/rightsml-dev/tree/master/licensed • Helped me discover (and fix) various problems – In both ODRL specs and RightsML documentation © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 10
  • 11. Rights in Binaries • Rights metadata for photo and video – An id linking to a registry with rights metadata is one approach – Embedding rights metadata in binaries needs to be supported • Express ODRL and hence RightsML in JSON – Easy to embed in XMP (unlike RDF or XML) – Designed to be simpler, more “natural” JSON, akin to NINJS – Try it out and provide feedback – Drafted within W3C ODRL Community Group – http://www.w3.org/community/odrl/work/json/ © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 11
  • 12. Rights and IPTC Photo Metadata • Next IPTC Photo Metadata update will add support – http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML-Requirements-for-Embedding- Rights-in-Binaries – A field and a way to convey how to handle it (e.g. MIME type) • XMP already supports 3+ rights representations – CC, PLUS, PRISM – What should providers do? Recipients? – How should rights in XMP be displayed e.g. in Adobe panels? © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 12
  • 13. RightsML and the iptc.org website • RightsML added to the “main” iptc.org website • http://www.iptc.org/site/RightsML/ • Continues to be documented in detail on the “dev” site • http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 13
  • 14. How to Drive Adoption? • What are the hurdles preventing adoption? • Is there anything else that IPTC can do to help? • http://dev.iptc.org/RightsML • iptc-rightsml-dev@yahoogroups.com © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 14
  • 15. Date and Place of Next Meeting Frankfurt, Germany October, 2014 https://www.flickr.com/photos/75487768@N04/12188256115 感谢和再见! © 2014 IPTC (www.iptc.org) All rights reserved 15
