What is a Nanometer? Join Laura and Martin on a wild ride through the milliworld and the microworld to reach the nanoworld. Along the way, they discover how small a nanometer truly is. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Nano/Bio Connection Nanotechnology is not just a topic for physicists, chemists, and engineers. Laura explains the important role of biologists in this field, and shows how they may help provide clues to molecular assembly techniques. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Scanning Probe Microscopes Laura explains how scanning probe microscopes can be used to create images of small devices, molecules, and even atoms! A large-scale version of the scanning probe microscope is built out of Legos to show the basic principles. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Nanomanufacturing: Top-Down and Bottom-Up Martin presents an overview of nanomanufacturing techniques, explaining the difference between top-down and bottom-up approaches. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
How Semiconductors and Transistors Work This annimation shows how semiconductor crystals work and how they are used to make transistor switches. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Molecular Beam Epitaxy This resource describes Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Microelectronic devices are made by repeating two steps: 1) Depositing a thin uniform layer of material; 2) Then using a photographic process to pattern and remove unwanted areas of that layer. Layer thickness determines the height of the device, photography determines its length and width. So, to make devices smaller, you can make the layers thinner and/or make the photographic features finer. Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) is the all time champ at making thin layers - with MBE one can routinely make layers a single atom thick! From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Scanning Probe Microscope Piezoelectric Crystals In this resource we disassemble the piezoelectric assembly of a scanning probe microscope. At its core is a white cylinder of the piezoelectric material. If you look closely, it has a granular texture that reflects the fact that it is actually made up of many small crystals. Scanning Probe Microscope Operation Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPM's) include Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM's) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopes (STM's or STEM's). They are the only instruments in widespread use that can actually "see" single atoms! You can skim this resource quickly to learn the general concepts of SPM's, or you can read carefully and almost be ready to operate one! From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
Fabrication of MOSFET within a Microprocessor This resource depicts the step-by-step process by which the transistors of an integrated circuit are made. From on January 6, 2006 at 10:01 a.m..
The year 2005 in space pictures The Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s very far out gallery here is a beautiful and fascinating overview of space exploration in 2005. The above image from the Universe section is called Mountains of Creation. The website is also a high end model of the state of the web interface art in 2005.
