Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Identity Networks Are Here, Half an Hour [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] In the last weeks events have come together enough to say that identity networks have arrived on the seen. It will be months, maybe years, before they impact large numbers of web users. But they're here now. In this article I describe the major systems that have come together to create the identity network. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Scott Wilson[Edit][Delete]: More standards? Which? Why?, June 30, 2006
[link: 7 Hits] Scott Wilson reacts to Michael Feldstein's defense of standards as a way of enabling long tail applications. All very fine, but as Wilson notes, a defense of standards in principle hardly equates to a defense of standards as they have actually evolved: "IMS has a huge back catalogue of released specifications. Some were developed far too early for their target problem space... Some developed too slowly to keep pace with general technology... Some doesn't seem to solve a real problem at all... Some are now in direct competition with lightweight web specifications... [and] At least one seems primarily to exist to support the business models of large publishers." George Siemens[Edit][Delete]: Knowing Before Doing?, Connectivism Blog [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: 14 Hits] George Siemens observes, "The desire to control and manage communities... [is] at odds with how things need to happen for online spaces to prosper." Quite right. People always seems to feel they need to manage the outcome, even if they don't know what it is they are managing or what outcome they desire. "Instead of trying to force these tools into organizational structures, let them exist for a while. See what happens. Don't decide the entire solution in advance. See the process as more of a dance than a structured enactment of a solution." Artichoke (who seems to have a stuck bold key) also comments. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Various authors[Edit][Delete]: LearnServe Ethiopia 2006, June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] This is one of those examples you really like to see. In this blog, the entries, "all written by students, describe the experiences of LearnServe Ethiopia âx" a group of 17 high school students and 12 teachers from DC-area public and private schools âx" as they experience Ethiopia in the summer of 2006." How great is that? Via GLEF. [Tags: , , , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Various authors[Edit][Delete]: SmartBrief, June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] So what might OLDaily look like if it were a commercial publication. Tze was good enough to send me this link to a product called a SmartBrief, and in particular, the SmartBrief offered by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) - here's the direct link, though it may cease functioning in the future (coded URLs tend to do that).

What you'll notice first is how nice it looks. The professionally designed piece uses a standard red black and white colour combo with a nice readable Arial text. Next, you'll see the many advertisements that accompany the issue - ads from private universities, publishers, and software vendors. And finally, you'll see the risk-free content culled from newspapers and magazines. No blogs here! Nothing controversial, either; no opinions, no criticisms. Pablum. Marshall Kirkpatrick[Edit][Delete]: Newsgator Posts Roadmap For the Future of RSS, Techcrunch [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] A look at what the future of RSS may hold, as related by the people behind Newsgator. Me, I think personalized feeds, social network generated feeds, and context-specific feeds will add a whole new dimension to online content. Thanks Todd for the link. Unattributed[Edit][Delete]: AJAX Desktop Tutorial - Overview, MuseStorm [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] Step by step instructions describing how to create an Ajax home page. If you're wondering what the fuss is about Ajax, the demo page will give you a good idea. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Barbara Fister[Edit][Delete]: Scholarship in a Read/Write World, ACRLog [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] Discussion of the idea that the wisdom of crowds could be used to evaluate academic work, including discussion of (and a link to) a commentary in Nature. I find it interesting to note that while there's a lot of commentary in the responses to the Nature article about "the mob's" lack of credentials, the writers have no hesitation to comment on a phenomenon they have obviously not investigated. One wonders, additionally, how many peers review articles that are beyond their competence to comprehend. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Konrad Glogowski[Edit][Delete]: Progressive Discourse, Blog of Proximal Development [Edit][Delete] June 30, 2006
[link: Hits] A compelling account of how blogging in a classroom setting took students beyond mere learning. "That's when I realized that this class community was truly engaged, that its members were interested in pursuing knowledge as researchers who are passionately involved and not as students who need to absorb the content." Will Richardson also comments. [Tags: , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
