Teemu Arina[Edit][Delete]: EU eLearning Conference 2006, July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] Teemu Arina writes in, "these few links might be of interest to you: a dedicated talk to you and others on informal learning, just trying to steer the policy makers in EU in the right direction (I hope), and a podcast from the BBC guy on how they supported social computing inside their organization. And our conference aggregator, of course." I watched the first item, the screencast, with is a nice statement of the decentralized approach to learning technologies. Quite a number of good diagrams; even if you don't have the 35 minutes to listen to the audio, take a bit of time and check out the images. [Tags: , , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Lanny Arvan[Edit][Delete]: Current Thinking On LMS, Lanny on Learning Technology [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] Good article on the current state of the learning management system (LMS), perhaps best summarized by the author: "The LMS is an environment for managing course logistics and for promoting learning. Changes in IT that we're all observing can threaten and ultimately defeat the LMS, if LMS vendors don't adapt appropriately to that changing environment. There are some fairly straightforward changes that need to be made on the convenience front that will make information housed in the LMS accessible by student when using their cell phones, which is their preferred mobile device. But the real case for the LMS will be made for what it delivers directly to promote learning and we need to see modifications of already existing capabilities to push these environments in that direction." Julie Lindsay[Edit][Delete]: Podcast Jazz Wiki: Invitation to Contribute, eLearning Blog [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] The title is a bit misleading; this short item is actually some discussion and links to the Podcast Bangladesh project, including Julie Lindsay's presentation at NECC06. It's worth a visit to her blog to see more blogging from NECC06 and to broaden the international perspective. Also from NECC: the Web 2.0 in education discussion wiki page and MP3 recording, via Learning in Hand. [Tags: , , , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Lorcan Dempsey[Edit][Delete]: The Digital Library Landscape and Trends in the World of Web 2.0, Edinburgh University Library [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] If you have two and a half hours to watch a video, be sure to watch this one, a presentation by Lorcan Dempsey organized by the Digital Library Division of Edinburgh University Library. It's the first detailed look I've seen at the impact of web 2.0 approaches on university libraries. Around the 30:00 minute there's even a discussion of the 'Future VLE' chart (Dave Tosh's version), and Dempsey, while observing (with reference to Liz Lyon) that "URLs are the new currency" asks librarians "How many of your resources have URLs?" Dempsey also describes "a new kind of consumer... these are the things that manage workflow. No (single) service is the focus of the user's attention." Via Library Online. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: ZDNet Education, Zdnet [Edit][Delete]ZDNet [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] Another look at what this newsletter would look like as a commercial product, this time from ZDNet. This isn't a bad service. For one thing, the coverage is broader - I was drawn to it via a reference to ZDNet coverage of Konrad Glogowski's post on student blogging. I also see Robin Good as a source. Also, the self-styled blog features regular opinion columns. It's still mostly advertising, and the RSS feeds are a mismatch to the blog content (no autodiscovery either), but it's pretty good. Ton Zijlstra[Edit][Delete]: Social Software Works In Triangles, Interdependent Thoughts [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] As I commented in the discussion: Social network analysis (and most social network software) tells you that two people, A and B, are connected. But that's it. Social networking becomes a semantic social network when we can determine how A and B are connected. When we can determine what meaning they share in common. Good insight, good post. Val Ross[Edit][Delete]: Who's killing Death By Popcorn?, Globe and Mail [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] The Globe and Mail website has a nice new refreshing design (I really like it) and appears to have abandoned the mandatory registration policy I complained so bitterly about. Readers must still pay for some content, though I think the newspaper overestimates the value of its own opinions (as do most people). So I can start linking to the paper again, albeit cautiously.

That said, it is with some irony that this article laments the way copyright restrictions have imposed corporate sensibilities on the artistic and creative community. "It's appropriate," Rankin sighs. "Our whole movie was about how corporate interests removed the Jets from Winnipeg. Now, corporate imperatives may remove our movie." For the record, it is officially the policy of this newsletter that the Jets should be returned to Winnipeg, the Nordiques to Quebec City, and the Expos to Montreal. Margaret Landesman[Edit][Delete]: SNARB - Coming Soon to a Library Near You, Charleston Advisor [Edit][Delete] July 6, 2006
[link: Hits] This article kept me more or less interested to the conclusion, so it is certainly worth passing along. But it strikes me as envisioning only half of what is possible with new online technologies, anticipating highly personalized content services, but failing to imagine the changing roles of content producers and content consumers. The resulting system is also much more overtly commercial than I would like, and designing a system where it is very likely students would run out of money accessing required texts would most likely be a mistake. I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
