Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: What's The Number for Tech Support?, Half an Hour [Edit][Delete] October 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Outline of how neuroscience informs learning, how this matches up with social network analysis, and how this in turn informs the approach we take in researching learning. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Will Richardson[Edit][Delete]: The New Face of Learning, Edutopia [Edit][Delete] October 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] "What happens to the time-worn concepts of classroom and teaching," asks Will Richardson, "when we can now go online and learn anything, anywhere, anytime?" Long promised as the goal of online learning, this scenario is rapidly becoming a reality. We are almost at the point where it begins to impact traditional institutions. George Siemens[Edit][Delete]: Eportfolio 2006, October 7, 2006
[link: Hits] George Siemens is preparing an upcoming talk in a wiki. If I were mean, I would pull a Stephen Colbert and see if we couldn't convert george's keynote to repeated utteraqnces of "I am a sheep." Would George say that if that's what the wiki said? Anyhow, Siemens writes in his newsletter, "My "keynote written in a wiki" experiment is progressing well for some projects (and not so well for others). The eportfolio 2006 wiki (for London, next week) has generated some useful dialogue on whether portfolios should be conversation-driven or content-based. The feedback from individuals is a surprisingly enjoyable experience...compared to my usual 'develop the keynote in the dark... and wait until the big day until it sees the light of day', this is a two-way learning experience." Seb Schmoller[Edit][Delete]: 2 Billion People Own Mobile Phones, Fortnightly Mailing [Edit][Delete] October 7, 2006
[link: 10 Hits] And many many morfe peoplke have access to one - one pervasive sight in places like Colombia, South Africa and Lesotho was the small mobile phone business. A person would get access to a mobile phone, set up a simple stand, and charge people by the minute to use it. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Barbara Dieu[Edit][Delete]: Simulations, Future of Learning [Edit][Delete] October 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Barbara Dieu sends along links to three nifty simulation packages. Breve "makes it easy to build 3D simulations of multi-agent systems and artificial life." Starlogo "is a programmable modeling environment for exploring the workings of decentralized systems -- systems that are organized without an organizer, coordinated without a coordinator." And Framesticks "is a three-dimensional life simulation project." [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Leigh Blackall[Edit][Delete]: What Would It Be Like To Be the Rain, Teach and Learn Online [Edit][Delete] October 7, 2006
[link: 6 Hits] Leigh Blackall captures the intuition behind learning networks. It doesn't mean everything is exactly as depicted here. But it's a plausible scenario. And I like this: "The challenge for teachers I think, is how to develop a web presence in such a way that this person will want to come back, subscribe, or otherwise tune in to what you are doing." I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
