Doug Belshaw[Edit][Delete]: 20 Ideas: Geotagging Photos and Sharing Field Trips With The World, teaching.mrbelshaw.co.uk [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Nice post describing the mechanics of geotagging (attaching geographic information to photos, so they can be located in Google Earth and Google Maps) and offering classroom suggestions. I am geotagging my photos, but I have a backlog of hundreds. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Graham Wegner[Edit][Delete]: Networks Of Expertise, Teaching Generation Z [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: 35 Hits] Discussion of the concept of community in relation to some of the recent discussions of groups and networks. A community is one of those things that can go either way, in my view - it can be a network of people living in the same place or doing the same thing, or it can become a group, define boundaries, and stress sameness and leadership. The edublogging community has always existed - what is more recent is a subset trying to define it as a group. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Leigh Blackall[Edit][Delete]: Youtube in Melbourne School, Teach and Learn Online [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: 2 Hits] Just an example of the sort of things you can do with a site like YouTube if your administrators or computing services haven't blocked it. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Babson Survey Research Group[Edit][Delete]: Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 2006, Sloan Consortium [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: Hits] Well it's hard not to get all giddy if you're a supporter of online learning. From this Sloan Consortium report based on responses from over 2,200 colleges and universities: "There has been no leveling of the growth rate of online enrollments; institutions of higher education report record online enrollment growth on both a numeric and a percentage basis... By an increasing margin, most Chief Academic Officers believe that the quality of online instruction is equal to or superior to that of face-to-face learning." (P.S. note to Ubuntu on the Adobe document reader: thank you thank you thank you (at last - PDFs that open instantly and properly, no more of the awful Adobe Readers that gummed up the works in both Windows and Linux). Jamie Anderson[Edit][Delete]: Addendum on APA Citation: Online Sources, SFU Surrey Library [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Terry Anderson writes, "Jamie Anderson, from SFU Surrey Library has created an addendum for the APA Manual that provides updates and suggested formats for citing online resources. Though not definitive (wait till the next edition) it provides examples that extend the rationale for APA resource citation to newer information dissemination protocols, including e-books, blogs and email etc." I like this bit of advice: "Don't cite it as an online source if you haven't viewed the text of the article/book online! ... Some databases show you the full text of the article, but others only provide the title, author and a brief summary." Oh my yes, I have learned this one well. :) [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Zamzar, [Edit][Delete] November 9, 2006
[link: 2 Hits] Sweet - convert from one file format to another, online, and have the system email it to you, all for free. Well I really like this site - but because I'm working with an absolutely sparkling clean brand new install of Ubuntu, all I have on my system to test it with are .png and .ogg files - and while the converter supports these as output formats, it can't handle them as inputs. Via Emma Duke-Williams, who got it from Doug Belshaw. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
