Content

This section is about the transfer-of-learning concept. Transfer-of-learning refers to how learners can integrate what they have learned back into their personal, work, and public lives.

Transfer-of-learning is the effective application by the learner of what they have learned. It is often referred as the "so what" or "now what" of learning.

Often transfer-of-learning is left for the learners to do by themselves. It is assumed that learners know how to do this. It is assumed that learners can apply what they have learned back at work, in their personal lives or in their public lives. Some do but many others do not know that they should be doing this or they do not know how to do this. It is the instructors responsibility to guide learners in doing this.

In preparing for transfer-of-learning, you must examine the following tasks

  1. Decide when the transfer-of-learning should be brought about.
  2. Resolve who the key players who need to be part of the transfer-of-learning process. (For example, learners, instructors, work placement supervisors).
  3. Select the transfer-of-learning strategies that will be the most useful in the helping learners to apply what they have learned.

You should be tieing the transfer-of-learning to the lesson evaluation component of the planning process.

Where in Bloom's Taxonomy does transfer-of-learning fit?

[ans. synthesis]

What are some of the verbs that could be used when planning for transfer-of-learning [answer change, compare, create, deduce, design, develop, estimate, formulate, hypothesize, illustrate, imagine, make up, merge, plan, pretend, propose, revise, what if]

One strategy that can used in the classroom is reflection. Below is an example of some questions that could used during a lesson.

  • How can I apply/modify/change this skill and or knowledge to use in my personal life?
  • How can I apply/modify/change this skill or knowledge to use in the work place?
  • How can I apply/modify/change this skill or knowledge to use in my public life?

Practice

What are some of the strategies that could be used to teach transfer-of-learning? List them. [answer case studies, role play, 'what if' assignments, discussions]
