Three Frameworks for Data Literacy
Stephen Downes,
2023/10/04
Preprint of an article I'm presenting in a couple of weeks. This paper considers data literacy education across three frameworks: the competency model defining data literacy, the assessment of data literacy competencies, and methods for the development of data literacy in an organization.

Google Jamboard's Demise
Miguel Guhlin,
Around the Corner,
2023/10/04
Another hard lesson for people to learn: you absolutely cannot depend on a Google product for anything important, because the company will kill it suddenly and without very much warning. The latest victim? Jamboard. "On December 31, 2024, we will wind down the Jamboard application, meaning your users will no longer be able to access their Jam files and Jam files will be permanently deleted." Possible replacements? FigJam, Lucidspark or Miro.

Josh Bersin, joshbersin,
2023/10/04
I've said in the past that "the credential of the future will be a job offer". We are now one step closer as "this week LinkedIn announced some massive Gen AI features in its two flagship products: LinkedIn Recruiter and LinkedIn Learning." Josh Bersin outlines the new products. "AI can aid and automate many time-consuming things we do in recruiting. And in every step the "generated" or automated process can be driven by data in the LinkedIn Economic Graph or your own company's vast database of employee and candidate information.

Unveiling the Brain’s Secrets: Study Resolves “Paradox” in Visual Recognition Memory
SciTechDaily,
2023/10/04
Visual recognition memory (VRM) is "the ability to quickly recognize the familiar things in scenes, which can then be de-prioritized so that we can focus on the new things that might be more important in a given moment." It's also0 - paradoxically - involved in detecting new and unfamiliar things. How does this work? VRM are associated with spike of activity called a "visually evoked potential" (VEP).... VEP is a sign of the activity of the brain quickly recognizing a familiar stimulus and then triggering an inhibition of activity related to it." A novel stiumlus - a burglar in your living room, say - will remain active and at the centre of our attention.

RSS has slowly been replaced by JSON over the years, and JSON feeds provided by REST requests are now slowly being replaced by GraphQL. This article serves as an introduction to GraphQL and describes some of the advantages it offers. In my mind, I think of it as third generation content syndication, though obviously it does a lot more.

Social media traffic to top news sites craters
Sara Fischer,
Axios,
2023/10/04
I don't use either Facebook or Twitter (now called X). You shouldn't either. I departed both sites for the same reason: people who followed me were not seeing my content; instead the algorithm pushed advertising materials, conspiracy theories, fake news, and other nonsense. I don't really have any sympathy for news media, because their commercial focus has resulted in paywalls, intrusive advertising, and a pro-business bias. They could address the social media issue head on by setting up an alternative with no paywalls or algorithms (ie., not Post). Something like open RSS feeds. But we know thy won't.
