Results from a panel made up mostly of chief information officers at U.S. higher education institutions. My first reaction was to the vagueness (and perhaps self-centeredness) of the list, with headings like 'smoothing the student journey', 'a matter of trust', and 'taming the digital jungle'. But even more pointedly is my criticism of the overall theme, which places 'competence' in opposition to 'caring', which is balanced on a 'fulcrum' of leadership. I don't think these two are in opposition at all, and there's something wrong with a perspective that sees focusing on one as a trade-off against the other.

How to Create a Qualitative Codebook

This longish article devolves into marketing in the last couple of paragraphs, but it addresses a topic I don't think I've addressed directly in 23 years of OLDaily, so that alone makes it worthy of inclusion. What we have here is a guide on how to create a codebook, some information on how to decide on codes, and some examples of codebooks. It's worth considering, in passing, how AI will support, and then change, the practice of qualitative research. No, it's not numbers and statistics, but it's a type of categorization, which AI is particularly good at.

The gist: "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we assess skills, moving beyond traditional tests." In the not-too-distance future, "We'll know that AI-based assessment is accurate — more accurate than any human-based assessment could be. The concern will be how pervasive and fair it is. People will want the right to be able to practise and develop a skill in private before allowing AI to pass judgement. And they'll want to be able to control who is allowed to see their assessments and who is not."
