It is with a combination of nostalgia and joy that I am writing to share the news that I am officially handing over the helm as CEO of Marine Learning Systems (today known as Ripple Operations) to Heather Combs. This is the culmination of a plan I embarked upon two years ago. MLS was (and is) growing rapidly, and could benefit from the stewardship of a CEO experienced in the much larger company that we have become. At the same time, SkillGrader, one of our successful maritime products, was also showing great potential for use outside the maritime industry and could benefit from a dedicated team and a CEO excited about building new companies (me)! Thus, with the support of my board and investors I started down the path of finding a great acquirer for MLS that could provide the backing and leadership for its next stage of growth. This would both benefit MLS customers and employees, and allow me to develop SkillGrader through my new company, Heron Skill Systems. Fast forward to one year ago when MLS was acquired by the Bleecker Street Group - a New York holding company with a “hold forever” investment thesis focused where all private equity should be: on customers and employees. And now, one year after the sale, I am moving on as I’d planned to focus full time on SkillGrader in an effort to advance individual and organizational performance through the use of skill assessment built upon solid science and emerging technologies. As an organization, MLS has done so much I am proud of - working hard and learning along the way to end up serving the largest and most sophisticated vessel operators in the world. Most importantly for me personally I have met people who are now respected colleagues and dear friends at so many of our partners and customer organizations. To lead this next stage of the company, I am delighted to announce that Heather Combs will be stepping into the role of CEO. She brings a wealth of technology leadership experience and a visionary approach that aligns perfectly with our company’s goals and values. Despite handing the helm to Heather, I will not be far from MLS. Together with Chad, Kate and the entire Bleecker Street Group, Heron will continue to partner with Ripple on SkillGrader on the technology and business front. While I am sad to leave this business we built from the ground up, I know it is in good hands, and am very excited to be turning my attention to this next great and exciting challenge.
