The advice in this article is sound: don't overwhelm students and instructors with too many activities. The presentation is odd, even eerie - the format is an interview with Kathy S. Gresh, an instructional designer at Johns Hopkins, who I'm sure is a very nice person but who is not 'the voice' of instructional design... and the article talks about TAs being the 'first line of defense' against overwhelming student interaction, which may be how they do it in traditional universities, but is not the way to do it online.
