thanks to some quick-thinking government folks and a glitch in the program. Code Red spread rapidly over the Internet, imparting instructions to servers to send out huge quantities of data to the Whitehouse.gov Web site at 5 p.m. This would have slowed down traffic on the Net and made the target site inaccessible.
