Current systems used in education follow a consistent design pattern, one that is not supportive of lifelong learning or personalization, is asymmetric in terms of user capability, and which is disconnected from the global ecology of Internet services. In this paper we propose an alternative design pattern for educational systems that emphasizes symmetric connections with a range of services both in formal and informal learning, work, and leisure, and identify strategies for implementation and experimentation. Getting beyond centralized technologies in higher education Centralized learning management systems still characterize the predominant institutional approach to computational support for teaching and studying in higher education. This approach contrasts sharply with the growing dissemination of decentralized, loosely coupled, and networked tools and services that provide increasingly powerful means to augment a wide variety of activities and practices outside of institutional boundaries. Recently, notions of personal learning environments (PLEs) have been brought forward and discussed as a viable alternative to the centralized approach to technological support for teaching and studying that most educational institutions employ. It defines PLEs as systems that allow learners to take control of and manage their own learning through setting goals, managing content and processes, and connecting with others. PLEs utilize various lightweight, learner-controlled tools from across the web rather than a single centralized system. The document provides examples of how to create a basic PLE using free web services and platforms.

Making moodle more accessible for staff and students UCL disability conferenc... by Jessica Gramp, has 1 slides with 535 views.Moodle is not completely accessible, since it does not fully meet the Wide Web Consortium (W3C) WCAG 2.0 level AA web standard. Even if it were technically accessible, this would not guarantee an accessible experience to all disabled students and staff (W3C 2016b; Cooper et al 2007). “When websites… are badly designed, they can create barriers that exclude people from using the Web.” (W3C 2016a). At UCL, we formed an interdisciplinary team of Digital Education and Disability Support staff and conducted focus groups with disabled students and staff to discover difficulties they had using UCL Moodle and generated priority areas for improvements. The focus groups considered both improvements to Moodle and its interface and support for both disabled users and Moodle course editors. Accessibility consultants, a developer and a designer were recruited to improve Moodle Accessibility from a variety of angles, by implementing: A new, more accessible UCL Moodle visual design (theme) for use on desktop and mobile devices. Enhanced UCL Moodle features (plugins) and configuration. Improved training, staff development and support for disabled staff and students, as well as course editors. Improvements to code within Moodle and theme. The first two elements are discussed further in this poster from the First UCL Interdisciplinary Conference on Disability, 2018. Moodle: using an open learning management system to support student learning by Keith Landa, has 28 slides with 2432 views.2010 SUNY Freedonia Teaching and Learning conference - "Universal Design for Learning: Accessible and Assistive Technologies to Enhance Student Learning" Session description: Over the past 18 months, Purchase College has migrated from Blackboard to Moodle for our campus learning management system. Our decision was partially driven by the lower total costs for Moodle as an open source product and our desire to avoid the risks and lack of control associated with commercial applications. Our primary consideration however was that Moodle provides a pedagogically stronger learning platform, and its openness allows us to integrate it with other learning applications that faculty would like to use to promote student engagement. This session will focus on the pedagogical aspects of Moodle as a learning platform. We will briefly discuss the process and findings Purchase College used to develop a consensus among faculty, students and technology staff to switch to Moodle. Participants will then spend the bulk of the session in a directed exploration of the diverse learning activities in Moodle that promote student engagement and learning, to facilitate discussion of how Moodle compares to ANGEL and Blackboard. We will examine examples of how Moodle’s open architecture allows it to integrate with external Web 2.0 applications, and finally discuss options for no-cost hosted Moodle solutions that will allow participants to evaluate Moodle for their campuses.

The migration process required developing scripts to automatically migrate most content, while some elements like quizzes had to be manually migrated. Custom authentication modules were created to integrate Moodle login with the college's existing LDAP directory. Usage has increased significantly since the migration, with over 500,000 visits and nearly 4 million pageviews recorded. Lessons learned included explaining the reasons for migration, showing example courses, and providing training and support for instructors.

It argues that current LMSs need to change to meet new needs by becoming more integrated, interoperable, permeable, relationship-focused and person-centric. Next-generation systems are being developed with these goals in mind, but current and next-gen systems will need to coexist and integrate through standards. Integration both within and beyond the LMS to other academic systems is key to the future of online learning.
