Metaphors for Social Computing

It's nice to see another e-learning newsletter author readingt weblogs (rather than press releases and mainstream magazines). ELearnSpace picks up this nice item from Jeremy Allaire's weblog complaining that the metaphors we use to represent social computing (for example, online interaction) are underdeveloped. Chat rooms, discussion boards, white boards - these are just bland two dimensional depictions understating the rich layers of social interaction possible in a networked environment. For my part, though I am a great fan of metaphors, I'm not sure analogues from our everyday physical experiences will do the trick: the internet is a medium in which the normal constraints of time and space no longer apply.
