From the "stuff I should know but didn't" department: "XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start." I installed it on the Mac this morning - after a 70 megabyte download (less than five minutes hre - your results will vary) I had it up and running in less than two minutes. Awesome.
