Though to me it seems to take a while to get to the point, this article about online learning communities is well worth reading. Of most interest is the observation that "there were differences in quality between one-time or shortterm online existences and ongoing programmatic experiences, and those differences were reflected in the nature of the community that formed, specifically as regards levels of tolerance and etiquette; and that even one face-to-face opportunity affected the nature of community that formed." In other words, communities grow and change over time, and they grow in ways quite unexpected, and often unintended, by the participants. Via Distance-Educator.Com
