This report, and a companion summary of accomplishments, gives us a fascinating look at the activities and lessons learned by a coalition of foundations funding eductaion projects in Africa. The initiatives were varied, ranging from increasing access to bandwidth, launching a journal of higher education in Africa, developing network management capabilities, opening opportunities and programs for women and for under-represented groups, and much more. The lessons learned point frequently to the differences in management styles of the foundations, the need to give program managers more authority, and the need to actually join forces and fund larger projects than any foundation could undertake individually. In all, seven foundations invested about $440 million dollars, the bulk of which was spent directly in Africa.
