So, OK. Here's Simon DeDeo: "Machine learning is an amazing accomplishment of engineering. But it's not science. Not even close. It's just 1990, scaled up. It has given us, literally, no more insight than we had twenty years ago." At a certain level this is true - the functions machine learning perfoms today, things like classification and regression, were developed for neural nets in the 1980s and 90s. What the major companies are doing today is innovation - taking these basic ideas and finding value in them.
