A librarian's take on student privacy

Doug Johnson cites Scott McLeod's post The surveillance of our youth asking "should we monitor every single book or online resource that our children read?" and (much) more. According to Johnson the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association states "We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted." But do they? "Students need to know that schools have the right to search their files when created and stored on school owned computer hardware," he wrote back in 2003. Nothing has changed.
