Warning on ‘Mirror Journals’

The story here is that publishers like Elsevier are launching "new so-called mirror journals that mimic existing titles in an open-access format." The idea is that researchers submit their papers to the open access 'Mirror Journal', but the publication also appears in the closed-access original, which continues to be the Journal of Record, and continues to be sold by Elsevier by subscription. "Robert-Jan Smits, the European Commission's open-access envoy, said there was something 'fishy' about mirror journals... 'You feel in your gut that you are being taken for a ride,' Smits told delegates." See also the Scholarly Kitchen from last October on the same topic.
