More than anyone else Bryan Alexander has been tracking the impact of the pandemic on U.S. higher education, from the pivot to online learning to the layoffs to the institutional mergers and closures. This article looks at the impact on faculty members, as there are greater pressures to support students and generate revenue, as well as on universities, as things like building maintenance falls behind and student life in 2021 looks very different from 2019. In typical fashion, though, Alexander predicts a light at the end of the tunnel. "After all, the tenure-track triad of teaching, research, and service still exists. So do familiar professional disciplines, and faculty members get to devote their days to their fields, if with some adjustments in class assignments and research support." I wonder.
