Miguel Guhlin thinks about helping his students learn critical thinking and is immediately derailed by Daniel Willingham, who offers what i think is very poor advice on how to approach the subject. Willingham advises the following process: "Identify what is meant by critical thinking in each domain; Identify the domain content that students must know; Select the best sequence in which to learn the skills; and Decide which skills should be revisited across years." To be clear: there is not a different definition of critical thinking for each domain or discipline. Critical thinking is based on common principles of logic, mathematics and statistics. These, and the method of applying these, don't change from domain to domain. Guhlin writes, "Ignorance has taken root. You'd think it would be easy to tear out, like a weed, but it's growing in the heart of your family and neighbors." Arguments like Willingham's is the reason why.
