Junhong Xiao considers the question of whether AI can give open educational institutions an advantage similar to the one they had when they were early adopters of distance and digital learning technology. His advice is: not really. He considers four major areas where AI is seen to provide an advantage: personalisation, automation, cost-effectiveness and creating virtual learning environments. In none of these does AI create an advantage, largely because of the costs, limitations and risks still inherent in AI. Good article, reasonable discussed.
