"Education is social software's killer ap," writes Terry Anderson, and I am inclined also to concur with the converse: social software is education's killer ap. Anderson observes, "Learning is defined by social norms, tools and contexts. Education can create the reason to expend the necessary energy to sustain a learning community. Learners enroll in education to meet others as well as gain skills and knowledge." All true. As Dave Tosh adds, "the ad-hoc 'social group' which formed once I started my weblog has been invaluable to me."
