I don't always agree with people on the criteria for successful community because I don't always agree with them on the objectives for community. Not all communities need to be all things to all people - and in some important senses, we do not want the same properties across communities - we do not want the emotion, loyalty and passion that characterizes a football team, for example, to characterize our school boards - or our classrooms. That said, I think that the criteria for community success posited by George Roberts to be worth scrutiny, at least for those communities where there is shared intention, purpose or practice (ie., more like the football team, less like the classroom?).
