In this 2025 book The Singularity is Near Ray Kurzweil set a date of 2045 for "a profound and disruptive transformation in human capability." This article accelerates that scenario somewhat based on what we've seen of the evolution of large language models. "We predict that the impact of superhuman AI over the next decade will be enormous, exceeding that of the Industrial Revolution." You don't need to agree with the authors to be sobered by it. No doubt something is going on; even the sceptics admit that. If the authors miss anything, I think it's in their focus, as they discuss only the AI models and not what is happening in, say, biotechnology. Via Alan Levine.
