Princeton professor Edward Felten and his team of hackers successfully cracked the music recording industry's newest anti-copying software, the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) and has been threatened with a lawsuit if he publishes his results in an academic paper. This, of course, raises the question of whether academic research must kowtow to the interests of the music publishing industry (and one wonders about the longer term implications of such decisions on academia).
