Assimilating the Web
Jun 26, 2001
It reads like a typical Salon article, which is unfortunate because this item has some important points to make. Essentially: we are at a crossroads. The internet, which began with a proliferation of independent publishers, has declined to the point where only a few sites control most of the viewers. And what those sites - Microsoft and AOL, mainly - would like to do is to eliminate the competition and created a closed internet. Why is this item on OLDaily? Because we are in the 'proliferation' stage in online learning. But we are edging our way toward the day when one or a few providers have a lock on content (I could name a couple or three candidates off hand). What happens in the online content world will happen in the online world. Count on it. By Scott Rosenberg, Salon, June 26, 2001.
