The author argues that we should respond to the criticisms of academic blogging by being less serious in our blogs. Hyuk yuk yuk yuk yuk. OK, that didn't work. He has some good points, like this: "Writing a blog under a pseudonym is usually an argument that the only safe way for an academic to write publicly is to write anonymously." Which is sad. But the response isn't to abandon the weighty. As Bradley Dilger comments, "I just don't see that hiding, either behind a psuedonym or by being quiet, is the appropriate response... we have to resist the 'culture of cringe,' lest we extend it even more, and become part of it by rejecting anything too innovative out of hand."
