Interesting article reporting the results of a survey of 39 articles regarding civility in online discourse (I wish this type of article would attempt to get a more meaningful sample). The primary finding appears to be that while online civility is widely thought to be a problem, it is practice not a problem, with most students avoiding flame wars and sticking to the issues. As I read this survey, what it says to me is that it seems that most problems concerning communication and civility online are found solely in the instructors' apprehensions and inexperience.
