There will no doubt be a lot of talk about this announcement made today by Facebook that it is opening up its platform. But when you look at it, they are discussing things like licensing Facebook methods and tags. On the one hand, this is like Facebook announcing, "No part of Facebook will be left unsold". On the other hand, it is Facebook trying to license very basic things, like the 'name' tag in a personal profile. We can have common social networking specifications. But we don't need to license them from Facebook.
