The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has officially filed OWL, its Web Ontology Language, as a "Candidate for Recommendation". Ontologies are used to define the meanings of terms used in metadata schemas. "Essentially, an ontology is the definition of a set of terms and how they relate to each other for a particular domain."
