Mike Caulfield points to "the damage that Coursera, EdX, Udacity and others have done to a decade of open education progress becomes more apparent by the day" by basically moving in taking over the phrase "open education" for their own use, in an effort to privatize and enclose learning. This comes in an era of increasingly tight budgets for anything, let alone open online learning, and just as widespread adoption of OERs was about to take off. "After years of systematic defunding of public higher education, the brush is dry, dry, dry, and edX just lit the spark."
